Making Soap

Making soap is now so easy. The old way of mixing fats and caustic soda was potentially harmful and long-winded. Simply melt this new vegetable soap base in a microwave or other hot source. Add colour, special ingredients and soap fragrances. Stir and pour into moulds. Any waste can be saved and re-melted and used in future batches.

Instructions: Cut desired amount of soap you want to use with a kitchen knife. Slice soap into small pieces for quick melting.  Place soap into a plastic or glass jug and microwave for 1-minute depending on the amount of soap. Continue to microwave in 15 second intervals until melted. Do not overheat as this will dis-colour the soap. Alternatively melt gently over a suitable heat source taking care not to over heat.

If colour is required then add drops of diluted cosmetic dye. (Cosmetic dye is very strong and it is much easier to control if diluted). Dyes can be mixed to create other colours i.e. Green = yellow & blue etc.

Fragrance is normally added at 0.5 – 2%, 5 – 20ml per kilo of soap.

Special additives can include almond meal, honey, herbal extracts, essential oils, finely ground herbs, liquidised fruit or vegetables, Wheatgerm oil etc.

Pouring Soap: Please see the table below for ideal pouring temperatures. The bar will be easier to remove if you do not fill completely to the top of the mould.  Once set, removal will be easier if the mould is placed in a freezer for 20 minutes.

Presentation: Glycerine soap should be wrapped if kept for long periods.  It can attract moisture from the air (humactant), or lose weight by drying out.

Be Creative! You can create multi coloured bars by pouring layers of different colours. Items can be embedded such as dried flower heads. For this, fill the mould half way and place the item in. When set, fill to the top.

The MnP soap base is a carefully balanced formulation designed for the home/craft/gift markets where an easy to handle and easy to pour/set product is required.

MnP soap is a vegetable glycerine base which produces a pleasant, soft and stable soap at a wide variety of temperature ranges. It is supplied both as a clear base and a white base. Finished soaps are effective yet mild on the skin and produce a rich creamy lather in use.

MnP soap readily melts by gentle warming and with a typical melt point around 60 deg C. MnP should not be overheated and should not be left on continuous heat as this can damage the soap causing moisture to be driven off and affecting the set point and texture of the finished soap. Overheating will also cause the product to discolor.

MnP soap is best warmed in a container supplied with steady even heat. The soap can be cut into smaller pieces to make melting easier and once a small amount of liquid is melted in the bottom of the container additional MnP can be added and will readily melt.

Once the product is fully melted (stir regularly) the soap crafter may choose to add fragrance, essential oils, herbal extracts and colours to achieve their desired finished product. These added ingredients should be added whilst the melted base is cooling but still liquid and well stirred to disperse them. Typically fragrance and essential oils are added at around 0.5 – 2% depending on preference and fragrance strength required. Colours can be added as required. It is not recommend to add more than 5% approx additional ingredients as these may effect the final texture and if too much is added the soap may be softer when set. If a softer texture is acceptable then up to 10% or more added ingredients may be possible.

The possible additions are numerous and often dried (clean) herbs and other botanical materials may be added for interest either into the soap or on top of the soap when poured into moulds.

Liquid MnP can be poured into any available mould. Take care as the liquid will still be very hot and the mould must be capable of taking a hot liquid. Many websites offer moulds for this purpose and many household containers including cake tins etc may be used. When poured the soap may be left to set evenly (usually overnight). Once set it can be removed from the moulds and cut as required.

Many interesting shapes and variations can be achieved by experimenting with layers or by adding pieces of set soap back into the moulds when pouring. There are many web based sites offering chat rooms and discussion groups for soap crafters and support on further information and ideas.

MnP soap is water based and over time may shrink by up to 9%. Wrapping the product or storing it in airtight containers will substantially reduce this but the soap remains entirely useable. MnP soap is best kept on a soap rack when in use and exposure to water (on the sink for example) will cause the product to soften considerably. Cold temperature will also force moisture to accumulate on the surface of the soap if not covered. Removal to a warmer place will rapidly resolve this slight problem.

The potential for creativity is very strong. Enjoy the product and enjoy making it and using it. Take care when hot and when slicing.

Caution:

When melted the soap base will be hot. Always take care and do not allow small children to play with the hot liquid or leave it unattended when heating.

Melt n Pour soap should be allowed to cool slowly. Take care to make sure the product has set completely when using or moving or removing from moulds.

Melt n Pour soap is best stored at room temperature and may develop a sticky / wet surface if exposed to air or kept in cold temperatures. Moving the product to a warmer temperature will quickly solve this problem.

For best results always store the base and the finished soap in airtight containers in a moderately warm place and wrap the soap in cling film, plastic or bubble wrap.

Take care when using essential oils or fragrances. Always check a small amount of soap base to make sure the product is compatible. Always add essential oils and fragrances when the base is cooling rather than hot. Many essential oils are flammable so keep away from any naked flames or sources of ignition. All essential oils and fragrances are very concentrated. You need only small amounts in most cases. Never take these products internally and always keep out of reach of children. Keep essential oils away from plastics and polished surfaces.

Melt n Pour soap should suit all skin types but in the event that any irritation or adverse reaction is experienced wash well with cold water and discontinue use. High levels of essential oils and fragrances may irritate skin. Use sparingly and consult a good Aromatherapy book for recipes or for oils to avoid or which have specific hazards.
